Description
The Department of Surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is seeking a full-time academic Ophthalmologist to join our esteemed faculty. As a major training site for the Stein-UCLA Ophthalmology Residency and Fellowship Programs, and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, we offer an exceptional opportunity for a highly qualified individual to make a meaningful impact in patient care, clinical and surgical education, and research.
About Us: Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is a high-volume Level 1 trauma center and academic teaching hospital. Our hospital is a safety net hospital that is part of the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, and serves a diverse, underserved patient population. Modernized operating rooms, completed in 2014, are equipped with a full spectrum of state-of-the-art equipment. Additionally, construction of a new state-of-the-art building where we are anticipated to begin clinical operations by the 1st quarter of 2027 is nearing completion. The hospital is also affiliated with the Lundquist Institute, a major independent research center. Thus, there are ample opportunities for resident education, multidisciplinary collaboration, state-of-the-art patient care, and clinical research.
The Department of Surgery has 13 divisions. The Division of Ophthalmology is currently comprised of two full-time and seven part-time ophthalmologists with sub-specialization training that cover all of the subspecialties in ophthalmology. Therefore, our division offers a full scope of ophthalmologic care. Preference will be given to candidates with fellowship training, namely in the fields of glaucoma or retina. Strong consideration will be given to candidates with demonstrated leadership, a strong history of scholarly research, interest in working with an underserved population, fluency in Spanish, and evidence of excellence in surgical education.
Clinical and Surgical Responsibilities: Candidates will be expected to staff medical students, residents, and fellows in clinic and in the operating room. They must also be willing to provide direct patient care when needed. Clinical care may also involve minor procedures and/or laser procedures, which candidates should be comfortable staffing or performing on their own. This includes procedures such as YAG capsulotomies, SLT, LPI, MicroPulse TLT, trans-scleral CPC, and general familiarity with Argon laser applications. Candidates will also be required to share after-hours and weekend call coverage.
Teaching & Collaboration: Teaching is a core component of our practice. We work closely with the Stein-UCLA Ophthalmology Residency and Fellowship Programs, along with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and so a strong interest in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows is essential. Additionally, candidates are expected to have excellent communication skills and an interest in working in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
Qualifications:
- MD or DO degree
- Completion of an ACGME-accredited ophthalmology residency program
- Board-certified or board-eligible by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO)
- Fellowship training (preferably in glaucoma or retina)
- Eligible for a California medical license
- Commitment to working in a high-acuity, Level 1 trauma center
- Dedication to fellow, resident, and medical student education
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to patient care
- Strong interest in caring for an underserved community
- Spanish fluency desirable and helpful
- Evidence of research accomplishments
A recommendation for an academic appointment to the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA at the Assistant, Associate, or Professor level will be made, commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
Equal Opportunity Employer: Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and the University of California are equal opportunity employers. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, color, disability, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, gender expression, genetic information, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or veteran status.
