Job Summary:
The Greenwood Genetic Center has an immediate opening for a full-time Board Certified/Board Eligible Clinical Biochemical Geneticist at the Assistant or Associate Level. The position is located in the Greenville office of the Greenwood Genetic Center and will have an emphasis on the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients with inborn errors of metabolism requiring dietary treatment as well as enzyme replacement therapy. There will be the opportunity to participate in teaching and clinical research. The successful candidate is also expected to participate in the on-call schedule for patients with biochemical disorders.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- May supervise or direct the work of other geneticists, genetic counselors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, dieticians, psychologists, and other clinical and non-clinical direct care support personnel.
- May instruct medical students, graduate students, or others in methods or procedures for diagnosis and management of genetic disorders.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Patient care (inpatient consultations, outpatient metabolic genetics clinic and newborn screen consultation)
- Review laboratory results and provide interpretation to patients and families.
- Manage the collection of relevant data regarding patient histories.
- Coordinate with genetic counselors to prescribe a plan of treatment for patients suffering from genetic disorders and conditions.
- Collaborate with other physicians and researchers to determine the specific genetic tests that need to be performed on a patient.
- Maintain complete and accurate records of research, methodology, processes, procedures and test results.
- Publish in scientific journals and presents findings at medical conferences.
- Collaborate and participate in educational activities of the Center; attends educational conferences.
- Read scientific literature relating to genetics to stay up-to-date on discoveries and developments in the field.
- Strive to enhance and improve treatment techniques for people with genetic diseases and disorders.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures generally obtained from the completion of medical school.
- Knowledge of genetics and data collection techniques.
- Possession of a strong patient focus with the ability to communicate effectively in lay terms.
- Ability to instruct and supervise junior staff.
Requirements
Education and Experience:
- MD or MD/PhD candidates who are ABMG board-certified/eligible in Clinical/Medical Biochemical Genetics.
- Qualified for licensure in South Carolina.
- Board certification/eligibility in Pediatrics is also preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- May require prolonged periods of standing or walking.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
